Beast Faces Adversity, Performs at Birthday Parties to Survive
After the total flops of their Japanese debut and first full album, recycled-idols Beast have had a hard time picking themselves up again. The members had to move out of their dorm and back into the same Thai restaurant freezer they had lived in pre-debut. “We’ve gotten desperate,” 44 year old leader Doojoon states. “We have to help pay for Junhyung’s G-Dragon wannabe wardrobe, we have to support Dongwoon’s coke habit, we have to pay our monthly rent to stay in our freezer. It’s hard.”
The young men have resorted to desperate measures; they’ve taken up performing at children’s birthday parties. The task seems simple on paper, but according to Kikwang, it hasn’t been easy. He tells the story of the very first children’s birthday party they did: “We thought kids were easy to please. We planned to sing some of our Top 300 songs and a few kids’ songs, but we were chased out before we finished one song. Hyunseung showed his face and the kids started crying. Dongwoon thought his singing would calm them down but they started screaming after that. The kids started to kick us while crying once Junhyung started rapping. It was a disaster.” Their manager then decided it was best that only Yoseob, a masked Hyunseung, Kikwang and Doojoon perform at birthday parties from then on.
“Has it been stressful?” we ask a masked Hyunseung. “Yes,” he says. “But I will keep wearing this until my band is number one. Or at least number 97.”
